What transpired in the first and second seasons of Demon Slayer and the film Mugen Train?

Tanjiro Kamado and his family were first featured in Demon Slayer season 1, which aired in 2019. They battle for survival in the Japanese woods during the Taisho era. When Tanjiro returns home one day to find his family slain by encroaching demons and his sister Nezuko transformed into a ferocious demon, his life is flipped upside down.

Sakonji Urokodaki, a retired expert demon slayer who instructs Tanjiro in becoming a demon slayer, is intrigued by Nezuko’s abilities to fight against her demonic urges. In order to join the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjiro must eventually pass a demanding and brutal test. Along the way, he encounters the cowardly Zenitsu Agatsuma and the obstinate Inosuke Hashibira.

Tanjiro learns that his parents’ demise and his sisters’ transformation were brought about by Muzan Kibutsuji, the first Demon King and the origin of all demons. He then discovers the existence of the Hashira, the Corps’ most skilled demon hunters, as well as the Twelve Kizuki (also known as the Blood Moons), a group of demons under Muzan’s control that has received a significant amount of his blood, giving them significantly more power than the average demon. Tanjiro eventually strikes an uneasy agreement with the Hashira over his demon sister after a fierce struggle with the Lower Rank Five Kizuki Rui.

The events of season one set the stage for Mugen Train, in which Tanjiro, Inosuke, Zenitsu, and Nezuko help Flame Hashiro Kyojuro Rengoku investigate a demon that is believed to be responsible for the disappearance of 40 passengers on a steam train. Enmu, Lower One of the Twelve Kizuki, ultimately merges with the train and makes a threat to devour everyone on board, revealing himself to be its creator. The Upper Three of the Twelve Kizuki, Akaza, attacks Tanjiro and his allies after he is defeated and kills the Flame Hashira in a bloody struggle.

The Entertainment District Arc, commonly known as season 2 of Demon Slayer, which debuted in December 2021, follows up where Mugen Train left off, with Tanjiro and his comrades still in shock after the death of Rengoku. They are sent by Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui to find a demon causing trouble in Yoshiwara’s brothel area, where they will face off against Gyutaro and Daki, the two demons who make up the Upper Rank Six of the Kizuki.

Nezuko appears in an adult form during the subsequent conflict, gaining stronger abilities that assist turn the tide against the demonic pair. Tengen loses an eye and a hand in the battle and is forced to relinquish his position as a Hashira, as has become the pattern for the series, thus the triumph is not without a price.
