Manchester United plans to implement a ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ rule to cap player salaries

The ‘Ronaldo rule’ will limit weekly revenues at £200,000 per player.
Manchester United is said to have implemented a weekly wage restriction of £200,000 to prevent players from earning’significantly more’ than their teammates.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was earning £500,000 a week, ended his contract with the club after stirring controversy both behind the scenes and in the public light.

The Dutchman, together with chief executive Richard Arnold, has chosen to take the next step in avoiding a “culture of dressing-room jealousy” by instituting a wage restriction, according to the Daily Mail.

The new regulation will have an immediate impact on several players, with goalkeeper David de Gea being the first.

The first to be affected will be goalkeeper David de Gea, who makes £375,000 per week.

Senior players such as Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Casemiro, and now Fernandes are all paid in the same range (£180,000 to £200,000 a week), with consequences imposed if they do not qualify for the Champions League. The goal is to pay more players at that level rather than spend £500,000 a week on specific superstars.

The deal will also have a significant impact on Marcus Rashford, with European clubs all keeping tabs on the England international. United recently invoked a one-year extension clause in his contract, which means his current contract will end in 2024. There are no certainties that he will sign a new contract, and Paris Saint-Germain are anxious to sign him.
